🇬🇧🇪🇸El Cautivo: And Historians Will Call Them...

Making movies about historical figures is a very tricky subject. On the one hand, filmmakers have the opportunity to bring to life the stories of those who came before us in a contemporary format, allowing us to revisit and reinterpret our history and (hopefully) learn from it. On the other, cinema is part of the entertainment industry, and more often than not creative licences are taken for the sake of dramatizing the story.

In the case of Miguel de Cervantes, what we know concretely about his life amounts to quite little. Which could be used as an argument to choose any of the other great authors throughout history  instead– if you’re going to have to make a fictional story anyway, why not just make one up yourself?

Yet it is precisely the fact that we lack a complete picture of Cervantes’ life that he becomes the perfect candidate for exploring a semi fictional story, and writer-director Alejandro Amenábar took that concept and ran with it in his most recent film The Captive (2025).

The thin line between reality and fiction is not only acknowledged but embraced by the film’s storytelling structure as we follow the events of Cervantes’ time held captive in Algiers, where he spends his days telling the other hostages stories about men in similar situations who found hope and community even in their dire circumstances.

All the while intertwining with the themes of love, rebellion and (self)acceptance, we see his relationship with Hasán Bajá evolve in what may at times be seen as a cheesy romance story, but which overall explores the complexity of an unbalanced relationship with an ending that sends a vital message to the queer youth of new and old generations alike.

Is it romantic, fantastical and probably didn’t happen? Yes. (But hey, let gay people have their little pleasures in life!)

Is it also the type of film we need every now and again to remind us that there is more in this world than just hatred and discrimination? Also yes.

Hacer películas sobre personajes históricos es complicado. Por un lado, los cineastas tienen la oportunidad de dar vida en formato contemporáneo a las historias de quienes nos precedieron, lo cual nos permite regresar a nuestra historia e interpretarla con intención (cabe esperar) de aprender de ella. Por otro lado, el cine forma parte de la llamada industria del entretenimiento, y es más que frecuente tomarse licencias creativas para dramatizar la historia.

En el caso de Miguel de Cervantes, lo que se sabe con certeza de su vida es bastante escaso, lo cual podría servir de argumento para elegir en su lugar a cualquier otro gran autor de la historia: si de todos modos habrá que crear una historia de ficción, ¿por qué no inventarla por completo?

Sin embargo, es precisamente la falta de una visión panorámica de la vida de Cervantes lo que lo convierte en candidato perfecto para explorar una historia medio ficticia, concepto que aprovecha a tope el guionista y director Alejandro Amenábar en su última película, El cautivo (2025).

La estructura narrativa de la película no solo reconoce la tenue frontera que separa la realidad de la ficción, sino que también la asume, a medida que seguimos las peripecias de Cervantes en la época que estuvo cautivo en Argel, donde pasa sus días contando a los demás rehenes historias de otros hombres que en circunstancias semejantes encontraron esperanza y compañía.

A través de los temas entrelazados del amor, la rebelión y la aceptación de uno mismo, asistimos a la evolución de su relación con Hasán Bajá en lo que a veces tal vez parezca una historia romántica cursi, pero que, en general, explora la complejidad de una relación desigual con un final cargado de un mensaje vital para la juventud queer de las nuevas y viejas generaciones.

¿Es una historia romántica, fantástica y que probablemente nunca sucedió? Sí. (Pero bueno… Dejemos que los gais disfruten de sus pequeños placeres.)

¿Es asimismo el tipo de película que necesitamos de vez en cuando para que recordemos que hay algo más en este mundo aparte del odio y la discriminación? Sí, también.
