Hot Young Geek Seeks Blood-Sucking Freak

The love child of I Saw the TV Glow and The People's Joker, Heath Virgoe's short film remains uniquely original in its balance of camp tone with spectacular sound effects and design. From the use of the vampirism metaphor to discuss important real life struggles, and an iconic visual style fitting for the main character's digital alter ego, it is an instant classic.

Hands On

With the refreshingly original setting of a Hands On A Hardbody Contest stretched to the absurd length of 18 years, writer-director Rory Kramer tells a bittersweet sapphic love story that uses the simple rule of having to keep one hand on the car at all times as a powerful metaphor for commitment. A must-watch for the experience alone, and only more so as a brilliant case study in creative settings for a screenplay to take place.

A Friend of Dorothy

A story of the unlikely friendship between an elderly lady and her young neighbour with the emotional backdrop of being in the closet. Dorothy acts as a nurturing and welcoming figure to JJ whilst JJ helps out Dorothy and keeps her company in her final days. This emotional tale is carried by the wonderful performances of each character but the two leads, played by Miriam Margoyle and Alistair Nwachukwu, stir up the emotions of the audience so touchingly.

Big Bass

This short showcases the necessity of queer representation for children. Drew Dickler takes the audience back in time to a specific memory in second grade in order to heal her inner child and her closeted younger self. 27 years after that day, she finally revisits her P.E. teacher who acted as a recognisable and safe queer elder. This documentary brings the audience to tears as Cheryl Bruttomesso explains how important it is to her to be noticeably queer and to act as an elder figure to closeted children who need that representation and acceptance.
