Ironic in tone but unironic in feeling, Will Sterling’s A Cell Phone Movie is the most entertaining and inspiring film I have watched as a filmmaker in a very long time. It goes above and beyond proving what is possible on a technical level by shooting an entire feature on a mobile phone – it also manages to address the very crux of the artistic experience, towing the line between the real and the unreal, and how our dreams can become reality if we shift our perception of them ever so slightly.

The laughs and giggles evoked remain present and reassuring during the entire runtime, creating a sense of familiarity with the main character’s goal and interactions with others that any and all dreamers can empathise with. But even when the tone grows more solemn, the film never does a full 180 into a drama – and that’s a good thing. A Cell Phone Movie sets out to be the reassuring hug and extra nudge and reminder that every filmmaker out there needs, showing that what they want to achieve is possible, and that finding community is the key to achieving it.

The ‘friendship is magic’ trope has never felt so genuine, and the redefinition of what success means that the film invites us to consider is the stepping stone to overcoming artistic – and personal – block. Regardless of if you are a creator or not, A Cell Phone Movie is a must watch.
