Driving into town is Marcelo, expertly and tenderly played by Wagner Moura, and we do not really know why he’s here - why now, at least. Something is off, and will stay off and unexplained long into Act 2 before we get any real answers.
In the meanttime, you’ll get to enjoy the place — the music, the people, the vibrant conversations, the intrigue, the good guys, the bad guys!, and the entire vintage world of the place. Very Chic.
Once we really know what’s going on, that’s when things get bloody, and Kleber Mendonça Filho will have you on the edge of your seat.
“O Agente Secreto” is more patient than it needs to be, and paints a sprawling network of characters and motivations, but it’s a welcome way to spend the time. The performances are easeful, nuanced, and at times brilliantly funny.
I believe I saw Netflix in the credits, so grab some Brazilian takeout, get your cozy hoodie on and settle in for some good ‘ol comfort cinema
