I wish this weren’t the first article of 2025, but simply put, we need our medicine (movies).

As we watch the Titanic that is the Western Hegemonic powers snap in half and sink into the sea, few things seem certain or secure. What I can assure you is that humanity has been here before, it has never stopped being in this position, and this could very well be the beginning of the end of humanity having to ever be here again.

In these trying times, I offer Cinema - this unique and beautiful creature - to you as a balm, a community building effort, and a reminder that none of this is unique. This dread, this fear, this descent, is all precedented.

Take these films, and my ever enduring solidarity, with you as you embark on whatever journey you choose to take going forward.

Cabaret (1972)

This is the obvious answer considering Elon’s antics this week.

Prey (2022, part of the Predator Franchise)

As a reminder that David defeated Goliath with a stone.

Paris is Burning (1990)

Because we’ve been here before.

Farha (2021)

Because none of this is new.

Do The Right Thing (1989)

Because it can escalate that quickly.

Milk (2008)

Because we outnumber them, if we’re brave enough to show up.

Fear and Desire (1953)

Because all of this is, and always has been, absurd.

Knives Out (2019)

Because goodness always prevails.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

ATTICA! ATTICA!

Sing Sing (2024)

Now out on re-release in cinemas - because you can’t keep a good heart down.

The Big Short (2015)

Because the way this is going, we’re gonna have a repeat — and I want you to be ready.
