Oral Tradition

With its impeccable use of sound design for storytelling and emotional impact, writer-director and cinematographer Graham Seely brings the title and theme of Oral Tradition – a short film that cuts between a 1940s song collector in rural Ireland and the modern day filmmaker – to the forefront, inviting the viewer to focus on the relationship between sounds and visuals, and the stories that can be told through them.

There Will Come Soft Rains

A poetic film that interweaves the themes of grief and climate change, tradition and innovation, and denial and acceptance seamlessly, with a rich script filled to the brim with subtext – and the recurring clever and daunting visual motif of overflowing water central to the protagonist’s fears of her father’s grave being flooded.

Grandma Nai Who Played Favorites

Is there anything more healing than a story about a closed minded family clinging onto traditions until a very symbol of that traditional past, in the form of Grandma Nai, pierces the mortal realm and reaches across the afterlife to ensure her grandson doesn’t end up in a marriage that forces him to hide his true self? Writer-director Chheangkea’s short film is the warmest and tightest of embraces, reminding us that if a cranky spirit is all for diversity, then there is hope for everybody else too.
