A visually stunning film with superb writing, pacing and performances, Nawi: Dear Future Me is more than just a film about how selling underage girls into marriage is bad. The film already assumes that the audience is on the same page, with most of the main cast of characters being shown to oppose this illegal practice and find small forms of rebellion along the way.

Indeed, the writing team – composed of Milcah Cherotich, Kevin Schmutzler and Tobias Schmutzler – take the story a step further, asking larger scale questions and opening a more complex conversation around dreams, hope, duty and what we owe to others; not in the way that excuses the closed minded excuse of following harmful traditions, but in a way that emphasizes that to fight back against generational trauma, society must undergo a generational progress, step by step.

This film is one of a million, reminding us that there is still a lot of work left to do, but that it is worthwhile to help millions of dreams come true, no matter how long it takes.
