I am not yet a mother, but to look with the eyes of one through this movie was at once a warning and a love letter. A true treat.

Amy Adams once again earns her status as the most nuanced and intelligent performer of her time, putting in a fantastic performance of a woman pushed to her spiritual limit. The film doesn’t insist on itself, but the story is pointed and very tone accurate. The ending made me cry, even though it shouldn’t have, and, more than anything, new fathers — or families who are expecting — will really find this film instructive.

I think many mothers may find this to be their favourite movie of the year — and though this film deserves an outing at the awards, i’m not sure to what end it will be appreciated. The audience for the P&I screening had a very jovial take on the material, whereas I felt I was watching Shakespeare.

Overall, it’s very much worth the hype.
